GENERAL SITUATION The moisture situation in the area is wet. Starting June 30, the area has received 1 to 2.5 inches. The majority of the area has received close to 2 inches. Approximately 50% of silage corn has been silaged. Corn is in the dent stage. Milo has turned color. The majority of the cotton has 2/3 grown bolls. Some fields have full grown bolls. CORN and GRAIN SORGHUM Grasshoppers migration has increased over the past 10 days in some area fields. We are seeing high numbers in certain fields. Producers should monitor corn and milo next to pastures, silage corn and corn drying out. Producers who are planning on spraying corn or milo for grasshoppers should pay close attention to the number of days to harvest for the material they are using. Sorghum midge should be monitored on a daily basis for any field that is still in the yellow bloom stage. |
Sorghum headworms will range from 0-10 per 100 heads. The economic threshold is an average of 2 per head. COTTON Cotton aphids will range from non-existent to very light. We are seeing a slight increase in aphids in some fields. Grasshoppers continue to be a problem in some area cotton fields. There have been a few fields where border treatments have been applied. Spraying the edge of cotton fields for grasshoppers is risky and may lead to a bollworm problem-upsetting the balance of beneficial insects. Boll weevil percent punctured squares continue to be below detectable levels. We continue to see a few traps with very light weevil numbers. Bynum, Leroy Walters-1; Brandon, Ronnie Brown-1 and Brandon, Larry Degner-1. Bollworm eggs will range from 4-52 per 100 plants. Bollworm larvae will range from 0-12 per 100 plants. |

We are seeing an increase in bollworm egg activity. It is fairly common to see 20-30 bollworm eggs per 100 plants. I would expect to continue to see an increase in bollworm eggs as the week progresses. Peak bollworm egglay is predicted for July 8. Producers should monitor their fields closely for bollworm activity for the next two weeks. We may reach peak egglay before the end of this week. Lygus bugs will range from 0-8 per 100 plants. Most fields will range from 0-4 per 100 plants. We are starting to see a little more Lygus activity. Spider mites are not being seen in cotton. Beet armyworm moth trap counts are very light. Larvae are not being seen in the field. BEET ARMYWORM TRAP COUNT

*Trap
was down at Chatt location. Counts include just Vaughan trap. (The cumulative
average of two traps/week. Trap locations are in the Chatt and Vaughan
area) Bollworm/Budworm Moth Trap Catches
(Number of moths per trap) * Bollworm and budworm moth trap counts are not indicative of the number of moths out in the field. The trap counts are used as a monitoring tool to determine the percent bollworm and percent budworm in the area.
