Volume XXVIII No. 9
April 26, 2003

GENERAL SITUATION: Cotton, grain sorghum and corn continued to make progress over the Easter holiday weekend and through this week. No significant rain fell, but some producers would like to have some rain to continue the excellent progress most area fields have made to date. Insect activity continued to show change this week.

Hormone Herbicide Damage

A report of hormone herbicide damaged cotton was received this week. Damage intensity was reported to range from none observed to plants which were severely affected. Numerous fields in the mid-Valley area were reported to have some damaged plants. The source of the herbicide contamination was not determined by the end of this week. A strong inversion layer over the entire LRGV this week could be why the herbicide damage was being detected over such a large area. Any hormone herbicide applied under the wrong conditions could lead to some plants being affected while others in the same field or area would not be affected. The inversion layer also would make detecting the actual source of the herbicide more difficult.

Cotton Aphids on the Rise

Cotton aphids showed increases in some fields, and decreases in others this week. Some insecticide applications were made for aphids. Beneficial insect activity was on the increase in some fields which helped to control the pests in some fields. Lady beetles and aphid parasites were very active on aphids in cotton this week.

Boll Weevils Still High in Some Traps

Boll weevil numbers showed increases in many traps across the LRGV this week. (See attached weevil trap records) Some traps showed lower counts this week than last, but overall, it appears as if more weevils still are around in large numbers. Growers still have the next week or two to make overwintered weevil treatments if their field situations warrant. This looks like a good year to be conducting those treatments.

Light Bollworm Damage Noted

Bollworms were more numerous in some fields this week. Some squares on the ground and a few worms in plants were observed in numerous fields in the mid-Valley area early this week. Counts of worms ranged from 0 to 5 larvae per 100 plants. Damaged square counts ranged from 0 to 8 per 100 plants.

PEST CAST continued

Cabbage Loopers in Scattered Locations

A few large cabbage loopers were also observed, but were not causing any significant damage. Most fields observed this week were growing rapidly and likely will attract all kinds of leaf feeders.

Cotton Fleahoppers Light

A report of increasing cotton fleahoppers was received this week. Where wild host plants which would normally support fleahoppers have been destroyed or died from whatever cause, cotton will be the logical choice for adult fleahoppers to go. Continue to scout all fields for all pests as their status was changing daily.
