Vol. 4, No. 6
THE INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT NEWSLETTER
FOR THE LOWER ROLLING PLAINS
June 28, 2001

Cotton Growing Conditions

Cotton fields vary from just up to half-grown square. The scattered rains last Saturday were a welcome sign and more would be appreciated. Square retention is high for many fields, but some fields have lost more than 30% of their squares and will have delayed maturity as a result.

Cotton Insects

Grasshoppers and Cotton Fleahoppers continue to cause damage in many fields. Grasshoppers to be found along the field margins but their numbers seem to be fading in some of the fields. Cotton Fleahoppers are being found in numbers ranging from 0 to 87 per 100 plants. Aphids have also been found from 0-10 per leaf.

On a more positive note, there have been very high numbers of beneficial insects. Scouts have recorded up to 106 predators per 100 plants. Many of these are spiders, one of the best predators of cotton fleahoppers.
In addition to the spiders, we are finding Minute Pirate Bugs, Damsel Bugs, Lacewing Larvae, and Lady Beetles.
