Vol. 4, No. 10
THE INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT NEWSLETTER
FOR THE LOWER ROLLING PLAINS
July 26, 2001

Cotton Conditions

Hot and dry continues to be the weather forecast.
About half of the cotton fields are wilting in the afternoon. These fields range from near bloom to cutout.

Blooming cotton ranges from 2 to 7 Nodes Above White Flower. Fields will be safe from worms 350 heat units after cutout. A field has reached cutout if the average number of nodes above the uppermost, first position white bloom is less than 4. It will take 16 to 20 days to accumulate 350 heat units.

Bollworm are being found (0-25 worms per 100 plants). I have noticed that fields that had high populations of small worms ten days ago, now are nearly worm free. This is evidence that the environmental conditions and the high numbers of beneficial insects are keeping the worms in check.

The Beneficial insects continue to be found in exceptionally high numbers (20-314 per 100 plants). That's no typo. We have seen fields with 3 beneficials per plant.
