Very little has changed in the past week. Prevailing weather continues to be hot and dry. Scattered showers this past weekend dropped up to 2 inches on some of the farmland. Many fields are still not wilting until after noon. However, 2-5 day old bolls are being shed by the plants. I think that this is mostly due to the high temperatures rather than the lack of water. We are seeing some of the lower bolls in early planted cotton begin to open. Most fields planted prior to June 1 are at or past cutout and should only be susceptible to insect damage for another week or two. Younger cotton is still trying to make bolls but will need some more rain to fill them. Yield estimates are going to be difficult until we see which of the bolls will stay on the plant and which will be large enough to make it into the basket. Bollworms continue to be found in lower numbers (0-21 per 100 plants). Some fields, primarily irrigated farms, have had an egg lay this past week. I expect that these worms will have a very difficult time surviving. The temperatures are just too high and the beneficials are too numerous. However, it is still important to keep an eye on them. Beneficial insects continue to be in numbers up to350 per 100 plants. Other pest insects remain absent from most fields. |
