IN THIS ISSUE:

* CURRENT CROP CONDITIONS

* WHAT THE SCOUTS ARE FINDING

CURRENT CROP CONDITIONS
The area cotton crop is continuing on schedule with program fields ranging from 5 nodes above uppermost white bloom to zero. If the current weather conditions remain the same, all program fields will have acquired enough heat units to be safe from weevils and worms by August 28 with the earliest fields acquiring enough heat units by August 10. All program fields will be ready for harvest aid applications by September 19 with the earliest fields being ready by September 1

WHAT THE SCOUTS ARE FINDING
Boll weevil trap catches are still increasing this week with some traps catching as many as 80 weevils in seven days. With trap catches this high you would expect to have an increase in percent punctured squares, but this is not the case. Egg laying and feeding punctures are ranging from 0 to 7 percent and are fluctuating between 2 and 7 percent every 5 days. I believe this fluctuation is due to a lack of squares and small bolls across the area. The fields that have been treated thus far are fields that have four or more nodes above upper most first position white bloom and, therefore have food that is attractive to weevils.

Bollworm eggs are still being found in most program fields and are ranging from 1000 to12000 per acre with larvae ranging from 0 to over 3,000 per acre. Remember, the economic threshold for bollworms is 8000 to 10,000 per acre.

Economic infestations of cotton aphids are being reported by consultants and applicators this week, although we have very few aphids present in our program fields. If you have aphids and are on a spray schedule for weevils, 8 ounces of Furadan would be a good product to squeeze into the schedule for control both these pests.

Whiteflies are still being found in fields that are late planted and or stressed due to inadequate irrigation. Most of the program fields have adults but few have any nymphs present within the fields. I have noticed that this recent round of showers has really slowed down these infestations.

Suggested insecticides and rates for in-season control of Boll weevils.
