PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Windy & Dry! Fall and winter rains gave us some decent deep moisture but a windy dry April has taken much of that away. Some planting has begun but many producers are waiting for the wind to slow down and a little warmer soil temperatures.

SOIL TEMPERATURES

The minimum soil temperature at 8" is averaging 69 over the past 10 days with the last several days being 72 . This will allow for good seed germination and emergence unless we have another cold spell.

THRIPS

Thrips will likely be a problem in emerging cotton this year with fairly large acres of wheat bordering cotton. If you are in this situation there are several options for protection.

1. Seed treatments or Planter Box treatment are the least expensive but give a shorter length of protection. They may give enough protection to get you past the peak time period with light damage.

2. In furrow products such as Temik are more expensive but give excellent control for several weeks.

3. Foliar sprays after emergence will work but timing is very critical and several applications may be necessary to get through susceptible time period.

SCOUT APPLICATIONS

We are still taking applications for insect scouts until May 9th. If you know someone that might be interested let me know.

SCOUT SCHOOL

The classroom part of the insect scout school will be held on Monday, June 9th from 8:30 - 12:00 at the San Angelo Research and Extension Center. This is open to anyone interested in brushing up on their insect ID and scouting techniques.

SURVEY SCOUTING PROGRAM

We will be scouting one field per producer again this year. If you know of a new producer that is not on the list, let me know.

PECAN NUT CASEBEARER

Moth activity has shown up in pheremone traps in the area. This activity suggests we should begin watching for possible egg laying activity by May 10th and preparing for insecticide treatments by May 15th-20th. These are predictions and you should be scouting to determine what is happening in your orchard.
