PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Warming up! We do not have great moisture conditions but soil moisture is better than it has been in 9 years. Cotton planting has begun. Ten day average soil temperatures have been 700.

SCOUT APPLICATIONS

We are taking scout applications until May 10th. Applications are available at Glasscock, Reagan or Upton County Extension Offices. If you know anyone that might be interested, have them contact one of these offices.

SCOUTING PROGRAM

We will again scout one field per producer in the St. Lawrence Cotton Growers area. If you are a new producer or know of a new one please let me know. We will begin the scouting program with the scouts attending scout school on June 3rd & 4th. They will start locating and scouting fields after returning.

SCOUT SCHOOL

Insect Scout School will be held Monday, June 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to Noon at the San Angelo Research and Extension Center. For more information, contact my office.

APPLIED RESEARCH

We are planting and implementing projects on varieties, fertility, salinity management, conservation tillage, insect control, weed control, etc... I want to thank the cooperating producers up front for helping us make these projects possible.

NEW FARM BILL MEETING

FRIDAY, MAY 17TH ~ 1:30 P.M.

DOROTHY GARRETT COLLISEUM

THRIPS

We have an abundance of thrips present at this time. They have begun moving around as wheat has been plowed up or begins to dry down. If you are planting cotton now or will begin soon, I would suggest considering one of several options. Soil applied insecticides such at Thimet®, Payload®, Temik® or Disyston® give the longest control but also are most expensive.

The planter box treatments with Orthene® or Address® only last for 1-2 weeks but are much less costly.

The third option of foliar sprays are in the middle expense wise and can be very effective if timed correctly.

With the economics of cotton production and past history of yield loss to thrips damage in our area, I would consider the planter box treatment or foliar sprays.

As it warms up more and cotton grows more rapidly, thrips will be of less concern.

PECAN NUT CASEBEARER

We are currently running pheremone traps for casebearer. Casebearer activity usually increases later in May. We will alert you on their activity as it increases.
