PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Rainfall over the past couple of weeks ranged from 1/4" to 2" but most of the area remains dry. Cotton ranges from planting to second true leaf. Thrips are present in extremely high numbers.
.

PECAN NUT CASEBEARER

Phermone trap catches and visual observation has shown that the optimum time to treat area pecans for casebearers will be from the 18th-21st of May. Some products labeled for casebearer control include Confirm, Lorsban, Sevin, Malathion and several Bt products.

Casebearer control is most important in pecan orchards or yards if you are trying to maximize yields.

MAILING LIST UPDATE

We are required to update our newsletter mailing list annually. Enclosed is a form to fill out and return to my office if you want to continue receiving the newsletter. Only those who return the form will remain on the mailing list. There is a space to mark if you want to receive the newsletter by e-mail.

THRIPS

Thrips can be found in extremely high numbers migrating around the area. The many acres of wheat and weeds growing this spring has produced high populations. If you are not using an in-furrow or seed treatment insecticide, you should watch seedling cotton closely for thrips and their damage. Some early PIMA cotton is showing heavy damage already.

With warm temperatures and good moisture cotton often times out grows thrips damage rapidly but with high numbers you may lose some early fruit set, dropping yields and delaying maturity.

JUMBO GRASSHOPPERS
ARMY WORMS AND CUTWORMS

In the San Angelo, Ballinger area they have been reporting problems with armyworms and cutworms this spring. Rick Minenmayer also told me they are finding 1" long Jumbo Grasshoppers in pretty high numbers in north Runnels County. You should be checking field margins and pastures for this pest. If you find Jumbos please let me know.

RESULT DEMONSTRATION &
APPLIED RESEARCH

We have planted and established various projects over the past few weeks in irrigation, fertility, pest management, varieties, etc... I would like to thank the cooperators helping us with these plots.
