PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT NEWS ABOUT
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES |
|||
|
GENERAL
SITUATION Cotton ranges from being planted to 5th true leaf stage. One patch of April planted pima has begun to set pinhead squares. Scattered showers over the past few days have resulted in rainfall from 0-1" but most of area remains dry. Thrips and Jumbo Grasshoppers are the most important pest at this time.
There is a new face around the area for the summer. Amy Bader, a Senior Entomology Major at Texas A&M University, is working with me this summer as an IPM Intern. Her primary responsibility will be working with several research and demonstration projects. Join me in welcoming Amy to the area.
The scouting program
will begin operation on Monday, June 4th with the annual scout school
at San Angelo and Uvalde. After scout school, they will begin locating
fields and scouting. The Scouts for the 200l season are: .

MAILING
LIST UPDATE REMINDER
Remember to mail in your mailing list update form that was included in the last newsletter. We are required to update our newsletter mailing list annually. Only those who return the form will remain on the mailing list. THRIPS Thrips continue to cause damage to seedling cotton in the area. Areas near pastures or wheat fields are most likely to have heavier activity. You should check for thrips in your field and determine the need for foliar treatments. Several of the earlier planted fields are showing damage to 1-3 true leaves but new leaves are now smoother with less damage. Any cotton that is delayed for various reasons would be most likely affected by thrips infestation. As temperatures become warmer, most cotton should grow more rapidly and thrips will be less of a concern. JUMBO GRASSHOPPERS Jumbo Grasshoppers have returned but not in the extreme numbers we last saw in the 80's. We have several fields primarily on the east side that are experiencing damage and requiring treatment. Pyrethroids, BidrinR, and Sevin R are some products that worked for us in the past and have been used this year too. If you have questions, let me know. Be sure to check field margins closely as soon as cotton is near emergence because we have seen damage to cotton that is just in the crook stage. |

BEET ARMYWORMS Beet Armyworm activity is not wide spread but one small field of April planted cotton had small larvae a couple of weeks ago on 50% of plants and was treated to prevent stand loss. This cotton was not Bt but part of the field was and very few worms or damage was found in the Bollgard portion of the field. HEAT UNITS averaged 20 per day the past week. Heat units since 5-1 and 5-15 are compared with last year and a five year average in the table below.
Roundup Ready Cotton planted in the first week of May is now reaching the 4-5 true leaf stage which is time to get your over the top application made. |
BOLL WEEVIL TRAP CATCHES There were no boll weevils in the regular traps in the last two weeks. In the week of May 14th, three separate traps caught a single weevil in traps east of Garden City. WEATHER DATA
is not available at this time. The weather station is under repair.
