PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Cotton ranges from planting to pinhead square stage. No rainfall has fallen over the past week. Thrips pressure seems to be dropping off and with warm weather, cotton is outgrowing them. A few beet armyworms are being found damaging seedling cotton.

SCOUTING PROGRAM

The scouts have completed scout school at San Angelo & Uvalde and are now locating fields and beginning scouting. Your help in showing them the exact location of the field so they won't be in the wrong field is appreciated.

SCOUT SCHOOL MEAL AND
SCOUTING KITS

Delta and Pine Land Company helped sponsor a meal for all of the scouts and agents at Uvalde during scout school.

Bayer Corporation presented each scout with a Scout Smart Scouting Kit.

THRIPS

Thrips activity has subsided some and cotton growth has accelerated so we are not seeing as much damage. If you have younger cotton that has delayed growth, I would keep an eye on it.

FLEAHOPPERS

We are not quite at the fleahopper critical stage but are quickly approaching in many fields. You should be checking for fleahopper activity and fruit set as soon as cotton begins to square.

BEET ARMYWORMS

Beet Armyworm larvae can be found scattered in some fields, but damaging populations are not common. Mortality of small larvae is generally pretty high but some stand loss can occur if numbers are high enough.

JUMBO GRASSHOPPERS

Jumbo Grasshoppers continue to cause damage in certain locations, mainly on the east side of the area. As mentioned earlier, they are more spotty than what has been seen in previous years. Pyrethroids, Seven®, Malathion, Orthene® and Bidrin® are products for control of grasshoppers. The Sevin® XLR Plus label also has directions for mixing a bait using 19 lbs of wheat bran with 1 qt. of Sevin®. You may also add 1 gallon of Molasses to the bait.

FALSE CHINCH BUGS

False Chinch Bugs are not a common pest in cotton or our area but they have been found in tremendous numbers in some locations. They suck plant juice from plants causing them to appear burned or dried up. They are causing damage to some gardens here and cotton in the Sweetwater to Ballinger area. Always something different.

BOLL WEEVIL TRAP CATCHES

Boll Weevil activity is still very light. We have caught no weevils over the past 4 weeks in our regular traps scattered across the area. We did catch 3 weevils in 20 traps this week in a field northeast of Garden City. These are still extremely low numbers.

HEAT UNITS averaged 23 per day the past week. Heat units since 5-1 and 5-15 are compared with last year and a five year average in the table below.
