PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Dry & Warm! Temperatures are nearly perfect for good cotton growth over the past 2 weeks. Cotton ranges from 3 true leaves to bloom with more fields blooming next week. Fleahoppers are the pest of most concern at this time.

SCOUT SAFETY

If you treat the field the scouts are checking and the re-entry interval has not expired, please let them know so they will not unnecessarily be exposed to the insecticides.

BOLLWORM

Bollworm eggs can be found in very low numbers at this time.

STINK BUGS

We are finding an occasional stink bug in area fields. They are not damaging anything now but we should watch for more activity later. Mark Muegge found several in mesquite trees in Pecos County recently.

BOLL WEEVILS

Boll Weevil activity is extremely low with no trap catches this past week.

COTTON FLEAHOPPERS

Fleahoppers ranged from 0-38 per 100 plants this week and % square sets ranged from 65-100 percent. Some of the heavier infested fields can be found in all parts of the area. Fleahoppers are reaching the threshold and square sets are getting too low in several area fields. Some are being treated and others need it soon. Not all fields are heavily infested but you need to check them now and make treatment decisions where needed without delay.

The economic threshold for fleahoppers is 25-30 per 100 terminals and a square set below 90% during the 1st week of squaring, 85% during the 2nd week of squaring or 75% for the 3rd week of squaring until bloom. Fleahoppers are difficult to scout for. If fleahopper numbers have not reached threshold but are present and the square set is dropping below acceptable levels, I would consider treatment.

If you are not planning on giving some fields as much water they may be able to set enough fruit even with moderate fleahopper population and damage.

KEY PREDATORS

Key Predators can be found in high numbers for this time of year. Damsel bugs, pirate bugs, big eyed bugs and spiders are most numerous at this time.
