PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Cotton ranges from squaring to full grown bolls. Most insect pest numbers are low at this time. Irrigated fields are looking pretty good but with increased boll load and hot dry conditions they are getting behind on moisture.

SCOUT SAFETY

If you treat the field the scouts are checking and the re-entry interval has not expired, please let them know so they will not unnecessarily be exposed to the insecticides.

FLEAHOPPERS

Fleahoppers are basically a pest of the past now except in a few late planted fields. Most fields have enough fruit set to make all the cotton we will have water to mature.

PINK BOLLWORMS

Traps ranged from 0-6 moths per night this week. In field activity is very low also in non Bollgard cotton.

BOLLWORMS

Eggs ranged from 0-11,000 per acre or 0-25 per 100 plants. Small worms ranged from 0-1500 per acre or 0-3 per 100 plants.

The field with high egg-lay last week was bollgard cotton and never developed an economic worm population. We did see a little grazing in terminals and squares but no survival.

FALSE CHINCH BUGS

High numbers can be found in many area fields now. They do feed on plant juices but no apparent damage is being done to cotton. I checked with several other entomologists and their does not seem to be any literature that shows economic loss from false chinch bugs.

STINK BUGS

They can still be found scattered across the area but numbers remain below 1 per 10 row ft. The scouts are sampling 10 row ft. in four locations within a field and

reporting the average numbers of stink bugs per 10 row ft. Most stink bugs found are the smaller green ones.

BENEFICIALS

Spiders, damsel bugs, pirate bugs, and big eyed bugs are the most commom beneficials found but lacewing numbers are increasing. They ranged from 5000-24,000 per acre this week.

BOLL WEEVILS

One weevil was captured this week in Glasscock Trap #43 which is located between St. Lawrence and Midkiff. No in-field activity has been found yet this year.
