PEST MANAGEMENT REPORT

NEWS ABOUT INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN GLASSCOCK, REAGAN AND UPTON COUNTIES

GENERAL SITUATION

Rain has come! Rainfall on August 9th, 16th and 17th resulted in amounts from 1-4.5 inches across the area. In general, it was too late to have a big effect on this years crop, but it sure is a morale booster. We are seeing some isolated economic bollworm activity in late cotton.

BOLLWORMS

Bollworm activity has increased to economic levels in a late planted lush field this past week. Most area fields have shed younger fruit and should not be susceptible to much bollworm damage. Those fields that are still actively fruiting should be monitored for another 2-3 weeks.

APHIDS

Aphid activity is still very light and scattered.

BOLL WEEVILS

Boll weevil activity in the field is still difficult to find.
There were no captures in traps this week.

PINK BOLLWORMS

Pink Bollworm activity remains low(below 3% infested bolls) and trap catches ranged from 0-4 moths per night this week.

WEED CONTROL

Several people have been asking questions about perennial weed control since we have had some decent rain to allow these weeds to grow and get in better condition for herbicide to work.

I would suggest that you wait several weeks after the rain for the weeds to get in good growing conditions and mature more before treatment.

You should also consider adjoining crops or crops in the target field and stage of development before treating.

PECAN WEEVILS

Pecan Weevils have begun to emerge in area pecan orchards. The good general rain in orchards will wet the soil and trigger adult emergence. After emerging, the adults will feed on pecans, mate and begin to lay eggs as the early pecans reach the gel stage. I would consider beginning treatments for pecan weevils soon in orchards with a history of pecan weevil infestation.

Carbaryl products such as SevinR 80S are the products of choice for weevil control. You should consider several insecticide applications at 10-14 day intervals to protect nuts.
