If you are not scouting your own cotton nor have hired a consultant, it may be of great benefit to consider doing so. It will aid you in making management decisions which can save money and increase yield. We will scout cotton acres from now through maturity to provide pest and beneficial insect population information and management options. The fee is $6.00 per acre. Please contact our office to enroll fields, 637-4060.

General Situation:
Very limited areas received one tenth to one quarter inch of rain, some included hail. Most hail damage was light and many fields will recover. Nearly all peanuts and irrigated cotton have been planted with dryland cotton being "dusted in". Even though we had the limited rainfall, the entire are is in desperate need of wide spread precipitation. Insects of concern this week include thrips and grasshoppers.

Thrips:
While cotton is not near the end of the Roundup application window, many producers are making early applications. If you are doing so and have thrips infestations consider a tank mix and make only the one trip across the field. The only way you will know if you need to treat for thrips is to get out there and inspect those young cotton plants.

While thrips may cause peanuts to look "bad" the research shows that there is no economic gain to treating for thrips in peanuts.

Grasshoppers:
Grasshopper numbers seem to be increasing in most field near C.R.P., pasture or rangeland as these areas dry out due to droughty conditions. Several fields examined this week with terminated or mature wheat also contained numerous grasshoppers. Not all these populations were causing significant damage. In some fields were the dominate type of grasshopper was the winged, adult stage of the red legged and two lined grasshoppers. Here it was often difficult to locate damaged cotton. However where the nymphal stage of the lubber (jumbo) grasshoppers were found, it was easy to see damage. There are several products labeled for grasshopper control in rangeland and /or pastures, which is generally the current source. A different set of products are labeled for use on cotton. In the last year several manufactures have dropped certain uses for products undergoing reregistration, be sure to confirm the crop and pest are approved on the product's label.
