Vol. 2, No. 6
209 South Fifth Street, Brownfield, TX 79316
June 28, 2001

General Situation:
Widely scattered thunder storms last Thursday thru Sunday evenings provided much needed rain to some fields, while tattering and destroying others with hail. Insect pressure has been quite variable across our scouting program fields. We have seen a few bollworm/budworm eggs and newly hatched worms and very few beet armyworms. None of the worm pests have been of any significance during the last week. We have seen continued presence of cotton fleahoppers and a few more lygus than last week. A significant number of acres has been failed out at this time. According to the F.S.A. office of each county, Terry County has failed 30,00 acres and Yoakum has failed 38,000 acres. This is predominately dryland with less than 10% being irrigated.

Cotton has grown well during this heat, that is where it has had sufficient water. Scouting program fields ranged from 6.25 total nodes to over 9 nodes, with square retention rates being quite variable.

Cotton Fleahoppers:

Cotton fleahoppers are still a problem in area fields. In the fields where we are finding fleahoppers, they are generally nymphs. These little guys are smaller than aphids and sometimes very difficult to see. One most scout thoroughly, carefully examining the terminal for these tiny gray-green insects crawling within the newest growth.

We are currently setting up a product test to evaluate several fleahopper materials. More information will be available next week.

For details on how to scout for fleahoppers and treatment thresholds see the publications: "Managing Cotton Insects in the High Plains, Rolling Plains and Trans Pecos Area of Texas 2001" TAEX publication number E-6 and "Suggested Insecticides for Managing Cotton Insects in the High Plains, Rolling Plains and Trans Pecos Area of Texas 2001", TAEX publication number E-6A. These guide are available here at the office or on the internet at: http://insects.tamu.edu/extension/ag_and_field.html.

Tarnished Plant Bugs (Lygus spp.):
There are tarnished plant bugs (lygus) present in many fields, but not necessarily at economically damaging levels. Although, I have received reports from private consultants of fields requiring treatment for lygus. A combination of lygus and fleahoppers can also be found in area fields. Where these two occur simultaneously, typical treatment thresholds should be reconsidered and lowered. Of course, our thresholds are reconsidered each time an input is required for this seasons crop.

Worms:
Our scouting program fields had no significant worm infestations this week. We did notice an increase in the number of bollworm/budworm eggs, with only a couple worms(newly hatched) being found . There were no beet armyworms (BAW) to speak of. I did get a report of one field in Yoakum County requiring treatment for BAW.
