Current Situation:
This week there has been one field in the IPM scouting program which required treatment for cotton bollworms. This was a later planted field which has plenty of squares for small worms to develop on. Aphid populations continue to decline. The lady beetle populations and lace wing populations continue to increase also. Adult lace wings have been more numerous in the fields than bollworm moths. However these adults will not lay eggs (or the larvae will not survive) unless there are aphids to feed on. I have found aphid mummies in many fields where the aphid populations continued later. The rates of this parasitism have been as high as 10%. It is easier to find open bolls on fields with lighter water.

August was hotter than normal, that is to say we received more heat units than the 30 year average for the month of August. Therefore we can see harvest beginning even sooner than expected. I think we should be prepared to utilize harvest aid materials on much of this crop and get it out of the field in a timely manner, even the "better" dryland fields.

Here is a discussion from Dr. Randy Bowman about the earliness of this crop and a table displaying the accumulated heat units.

Dr. Randy Bowman, from FOCUS, August 23:
Countdown after cutout.
Some fields are perhaps as much as 2 weeks ahead of normal in terms of development, based on the fruit load adjustment to available moisture. We have developed a table that indicates where we are as of August 21. It is based on actual Lubbock 2002 heat units from August 1 through 21, and from that point forward, it uses the 30-year long-term average for each day. For example, the table shows that for a field that reached cutout (here defined as 5 Nodes Above White Flower) on August 1, a bloom/boll on that date was able to obtain 350 heat units by about August 18. The 450 total was encountered by August 24. For cutout on August 10, we should obtain 350 heat units by August 27, and 450 heat units by September 2. This table also indicates the likelihood of obtaining maturity of late season bolls. I will spend more time next week discussing some of these issues. DD60 heat unit events based on date of cutout (5 NAWF) and actual Lubbock August 1-21, 2002 temperatures with subsequent long-term average values for the remainder of the season.
