Cotton Situation
Insect pests have run their course for the year. Weed pests continue to be with us. We still have about three weeks for controlling perennial weeds. Whiteweed (silverleaf nightshade), Texas blueweed, and Lakeweed (Woollyleaf bursage) can be effectively managed during this period of their growth stage. Also, make mental or written notes of weeds present in your fields. Those weeds that are present now were obviously not controlled this season and should be back next year. Making a few notes will help in modifying your herbicide and tillage program for next season.
Another pest which you would benefit from monitoring now is the cotton root-knot nematode. Taking soil samples now and having them analyzed
for nematodes is the best method for determining if nematodes are present, and at what level. This information will then determine if a nematicide is needed and at what rate.

Peanuts are being dug, some grain sorghum has been cut, and even a few acres of cotton have been stripped. Therefore, this will be the last newsletter for the season. Hope harvest goes well.

Cotton Harvest Aids
In the issues 14 and 15 of this newsletter I included information about the use of harvest aids on hail damaged cotton and the Cotton Harvest Aid Guide. In this issue I want to provide you with some results to-date from this years trials which I have out. I have sprayed

various treatments at Whiteface Farms ( Rex Carr) sprayed on Sept. 12th, Bruce Lawrence Farm sprayed Sept. 19th, and Levelland Delinting/All - Tex Seed Farm sprayed Sept. 24th. The best impact is to actually go by and see these plots. Rex was getting ready to strip his plots so you might not get to see them. Bruce's plots are at the northeast corner of Hwy 84 and FM 168 going north out of Anton. The All-Tex plots are right on FM 300 (south side) just west of Hwy 385.
Tables containing ratings of the various treatments applied at the Whiteface and Lawrence Farms are shown on the next page. More sites are anticipated to be sprayed with more information resulting, so give a call for the latest.

Just a Reminder
As in every year a portion of all pesticide applicators certificates or licenses expire. It is very important to note when your license expires and if the address on there are correct. With all of the address changes due to emergency 911, many addressed are incorrect. If the Texas Department of Agriculture does not have your correct address you will not receive a renewal form. Call them at 1-800-TELL-TDA and have them update your information. If your license expires this year you will need to have a total of 15 CEU's ( 2CEU's in Laws & Regs, 2 CEU's in IPM, and the remaining CEU's in any category). There will be more opportunities to receive CEU's between now and Feb. 28, 2002. You can get CEU's on the internet at www.tipmf.org or there are other sites as well by visiting the TDA website. A "Last Minute CEU" opportunity will be on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Whiteface C
ommunity Bldg. Call if you have any license or CEU questions.
